Summary

Danny Barker (January 13, 1909 – March 13, 1994), born Daniel Moses Barker, was a jazz banjoist, singer, guitarist, songwriter, ukulele player and author from New Orleans. Reverend Andrew Darby, Jr. served as Pastor of Fairview Baptist Church at the time that Danny Barker became a member of Fairview Baptist Church. Mr. Barker asked Pastor Darby what would he want him (Mr. Barker) to do in the church. Reverend Darby commissioned &#39, Brother&#39, Barker to form a Christian Band, composed of young musicians. Thus, The Fairview Christian Marching Band was the brainchild of Reverend Andrew Darby, Jr. Brother Barker went throughout the neighborhood in the area of the church enlisting young musicians. Many young musicians who started in the Fairview Baptist Church have become renowned and seasoned musicians, including, but not limited to, Leroy Jones, Dr. Michael White, Wynton Marsalis, to name a few. Mr. Barker was a rhythm guitarist for some of the best bands of the day, including Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder and Benny Carter throughout the 1930s.On September 4, 1945 he recorded with Ohio&#39, s native jazz pianist—Sir Charles Thompson—a date that included saxophonists Dexter Gordon and Charlie Parker. Barker&#39, s work with the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band was pivotal in ensuring the longevity of jazz in New Orleans, producing generations of new talent. Brothers Wynton Marsalis and Branford Marsalis both played in the band as youths as well as &quot, The King of Treme&quot, Shannon Powell, Lucien Barbarin, Dr. Michael White and countless others. One of Barker&#39, s earliest teachers in New Orleans was fellow banjoist Emanuel Sayles, whom he recorded with. Throughout his career, he played with Jelly Roll Morton, Baby Dodds, James P. Johnson, Sidney Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow, and Red Allen. He also toured and recorded with his wife, singer Blue Lu Barker.
